No. Determinations on genre are decided based on the sonic make-up of the song. It would be odd to see a song all of sudden debut at No. 1 just because it hits the top 50 of R&B or Country.

Also, what about album tracks not receiving airplay? Think of some of these “Nashville” TV songs that hit iTunes last night.

Could there be some songs that we reconsider for a genre based on down-the-line airplay? Perhaps, but we’re trying hard to avoid that.

Un autre (je mets les réponses en bleu) :

Dear Gary,

as a follower of Billboard's charts I am utterly schocked to see the change Billboard has made to the genre-specific charts starting with the current issue.

I really refuse to believe Billboard's staff would think this new formula for the R&B chart is even reasonable. The old R&B/Hip-Hop chart worked perfectly fine as it was compiled using airplay data from Urban and Urban AC stations monitored and singles sales from R&B retailers as tracked by SoundScan. Why would you guys change that?

I completely get that digital sales are more and more prominent on the Hot 100, but the digital era has already completely cut off R&B hits from appearing in the upper sections of the main chart and now they will be completely shunned from the genre chart?

I don't get how a song like 'Diamonds' which is receiving so minimal airplay from Urban stations can be #1 on the R&B chart. And what makes it all the more flawed is the fact that this new formula boosts crossover airplay. Why would we need a R&B chart if Pop airplay is used to compile it? We would just look at the Hot 100.

Also, how do you guys know how many downloads come from Urban radio listeners who heard a song on their local station and decided to purchase it? Digital sales are not comparable to CD singles sales in that sense, because back in the 90s Nielsen could track which purchases were made in R&B-specific retailers. iTunes is not a store where I can only find R&B and Hip-Hop music and certainly its R&B/Soul section is very flawed because, let's face it, their Pop section gets more traffic and attracts more customers, so labels will tag songs as "Pop" even if they don't belong in that section.

I am truly concerned about this new methodology. A lot of R&B artists release specific songs to specific radio formats, does this mean I am going to be seeing Usher's single 'Numb' (which his label released to CHR/Top 40 stations) on the next R&B chart? That doesn't make sense to me.

I want the old R&B chart back. It's historic and it holds a significance to the many R&B artists who are not popular enough to have their songs sell hundreds of thousands of copies a week and thus appear on the Hot 100 because they don't crossover. It's THEIR chart and they deserve to be represented on it.

--

I’m sorry you feel that way Mario.

This decision was arrived at after much internal discussion as well as feedback from the R&B music/label community.

The R&B/Hip-Hop Mainstream Airplay chart (which matched Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Song basically rank for rank) is still in existence and available for all to see. We’re just providing another look at popular songs for that genre (and others).

The creation of the pure R&B Songs chart will also help highlight those R&B-only acts (occasional Rihanna song notwithstanding) that are faring well.

And please note, our decisions are based on song genre, not artist. So Usher’s “Numb” would not be on the R&B charts.

Thank you for your opinion.

Silvio

Thank you for your reply.

I still fail to understand how this new formula allowes Billboard to give a detailed look at what's popular in the specific genres. Again, the current #1 song on the R&B chart does not appear in the top 50 of the R&B airplay chart. How is it a popular R&B song in the country and thus deserving of its #1 position?

I would also like to raise a point for those artists who receive most of their airplay on Urban AC stations across the United States. The current #1 song on Adult R&B radio (Anita Baker's 'Lately') is not exactly selling 300,000 downloads weekly (nor are the other 39 songs on that same chart). Does that mean Ms. Baker will never have the pleasure of seeing one of her songs sitting at #1 on the R&B chart again?

--

Rihanna’s song is just below the top 50 or R&B Airplay and the label is working the song to the format heavily starting this week.

Anita (who I love) would have a hard time ever topping R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. We created R&B Songs (a new chart) for those specific type of artists, ensuring more top 10s in their future.

We can’t make everyone happy Mario. We do appreciate your passion though!
