Twitt Carols Daughter

Guess which artist is releasing her next album on Feb 14th 2011? If you guessed Mary J. Blige then you got it. That's right...this February Mary will release her 10th album.

Released on November 29 1994, My Life turns 16 years old today. Critical reception for the "My Life" ultimately became admirable. With some boasting it as one of the greatest albums of all time. The album became the first real, dark, R&B album produced by Chucky Thompson and Puffy. The tone both lyrically and production wise was successfully created from track one to track seventeen, influencing pop, gospel & R&B music. Lauryn Hill states the album as an inspiration in her music. R&B Princesses Keyshia Cole and Jazmine Sullivan have sampled and/or covered work from this album. Other artist like Alicia Keys to Pop/Rock mega-star publicly stated they got their record contracts singing songs from this album, Pink has been notoriously known for covering "My Life" classics at her concerts.

The pain from the relationship was said to reflect the 1994 Puffy produced "My Life" album, critics stained it a "Pain Letter to K-Ci". The album featured no one but Blige and she took more of a creative direction by writing over 90% of the album, the lyrical content focused on her "abusive" relation. With sales of over 200,000 "My Life" debuted top 10 on the Pop Album charts & number 1 on the R&B albums chart, where it remained number one consecutively for seven weeks. "My Life" released four singles and with combined single and album sales Blige sold over 6.5 million records worldwide. The album won Blige 2 Billboard music awards in 1995- Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album and Top R&B Album Artists. She also shared a 1995 Billboard Music award win for 'Top Dance Music Maxi- Single Sales' for her featured roll on the Grammy Award winning Method Man "I'll Be There For You/You're All I Need To Get By", with physical single sales reaching 1.5 million in the United States and over 2 million worldwide the song received a platinum certification, it reached top 10 in the US on the Pop, R&B, & #1 on the US rap charts. The single reached top 10 in the UK also & became the first number one rap song to reach the number one (five weeks) position on the Canadian Hot 100.

Vocally Blige was more stripped, but still maintained her distinct raw and convincing vocals. The album placed Blige in a celebrity status that she speculated that the attention had disconcerted her--that she had not been prepared, socially or professionally, for the kind of intense spotlight music celebrity creates. In his Washington Post review of Blige's second album, Geoffrey Himes called her "the premier soul diva of the hip-hop generation." The album is the most accoladed female R&B album of all time. Accolades include:

  • Billboard Award Winning
  • Rolling Stone (10/31/02, p.136) - Ranked # 17 in Rolling Stone's "Women in Rock: The 50 Essential Albums".
  • Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.74) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90's."
  • Spin (9/99, p.156) - Ranked #72 in Spin Magazine's "90 Greatest Albums of the '90s".
  • Blender ranked it number 57 on their 100 Greatest American Albums of All time list.
  • Ranked number 279 on Rolling Stone magazine's the 500 greatest albums of all time.
  • It was included in Time's 100 greatest albums of all time list.
  • Grammy Nominated.
  • Vibe (12/99, p.160) - Included in Vibe's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century.
  • Entertainment Weekly ranks it 70 on their "Best 100 albums list".

Donc, J-??

TROP GENIAL

Mary J. Blige paid a visit to the "Today" show earlier this morning to promote her new fragrance My Life. Clad in a black overcoat, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul spoke on how her perfume sold 60,000 bottles in six hours on HSN and how a dollar of every purchase goes to her FFAWN foundation to better women.

"Educating them, empowering them, and encouraging them," said Mary of her intentions. "Giving them a second chance, whether they be young or old. You have some people give up in life. I was one of those women who gave up, and I just want to be one of those women to reach out and show women that if I can do it, we all can do it."

MJB also provided an update on the status of the oft-delayed Nina Simone biopic in which she stars. "They keep pushing it back. It's not my fault. I'm ready," she told hosts Kathie Lee and Hoda Kotb. "I went to the acting class, I learned 'Ne Me Quitte Pas.' I know all French, whatever—so I'm doing my job."
