Will.i.am has inadvertently confirmed Cheryl Cole will be back on the X Factor panel next year, ending countless will she, won’t she rumours.

The former Black Eyed Peas frontman is good pals with Chez and has finally put an end to the gossip surrounding whether she’ll be making a return to the show that catapulted her to fame.

With slumped ratings and more controversies than ever, bosses are keen to really shake up the tenth series of the show next year and Cheryl’s return is sure to be just the ticket.

Of her return, good pal Will.i.am enthused: ‘It’s going to be dope’, according to the Daily Mirror.

A show source has also confirmed the exciting news though, telling the newspaper: ‘Cheryl is coming back on TV in 2013 and will be working with Simon.

‘People love to watch her. She was with X Factor at its peak.’

Cheryl left the panel in 2010 after three years on the show, with Dannii Minogue and Simon Cowell following suit.

With Cheryl’s departure, a new judging line-up was formed with Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos and Kelly Rowland taking spots on the panel alongside veteran judge Louis Walsh.

But Kelly’s appearance went down like a lead balloon so for this year’s series, Simon drafted in the help of former Pussycat Doll and US X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger to spice things up a bit – and indeed she did.

Gary has already said his return for the 2013 series is unlikely and the odds are on Tulisa not being offered a spot for the third year in a row.

But Cowell has reportedly been so impressed with Nicole, it looks like the new panel could consist of the US star, Cheryl and Louis, leaving a spot wide open.

If she does return to the show, it could be one of a number of changes being tipped for the next series, with producers reportedly set to take the show ‘back to basics’ to try and boost viewing figures.

The 2012 series of the show struggled in the ratings, and was beaten almost every week by Strictly Come Dancing, with the BBC One show pulling in as many as 2m more viewers.

And Saturday night’s final was the least popular since 2005, with just 9.5m people tuning in – only 300,000 more than watched Shayne Ward cruise to victory in the second series and five million fewer than watched the final in 2010, the last year that both Cheryl and Simon Cowell were on the panel.

As a result producers are now said to be considering a number of options which may well include screening the show earlier in the evening and ditching the live audience for the auditions – instead returning to the original format where hopefuls auditioned in a room with the judges rather than an arena.

‘It doesn’t take a genius to work out that the show is not in the best health,’ a show source told The Sun. ‘We have had some very strong singers this year but the show is feeling in need of a reboot.’

Plans are also afoot to try and persuade Simon Cowell back on to the panel, despite his commitments to The X Factor USA – with one option being to have him on the panel as a judge rather than a mentor.

However, if Cheryl is to sign a deal for next year’s show, it’s likely her lawsuit against the US X Factor will need to be dealt with first.

The Geordie judge is said to be suing the makers of the US version of The X Factor for £1.4million after she was axed from the show after just two episodes.

She was replaced by Nicole Scherzinger on the panel after bosses were apparently concerned her Geordie accent wouldn’t be understood by the American audience.

The Girls Aloud star was allegedly paid £1.1million for her brief stint on the show but has now claimed it a lawsuit filed against Blue Orbit Productions that she had signed up to a second series, for which she was never paid.

An 11-page lawsuit was filed with the California Superior Court in LA on Friday.

Only Cheryl.

A supposed pal of the Girls Aloud singer told the tabloid: “She’s very excited but doesn’t want X Factor to completely take over her life again. Her new album is virtually finished and she has a great new single she’ll release this summer.”
