His next film is Blade Runner 2049. ‘I play a character called Neander Wallace — to be honest they had me at the name,’ he says. In the trailer, he appears as a black-eyed medium, murmuring a monologue to Harrison Ford. ‘I read the script and fell in love with the character. But I don’t think I’m allowed to talk about it — I may have already got in trouble for telling you the name…’ He pauses. ‘I can tell you that the experience of making it was one of the highlights of my film career.’ He rates seeing Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner as one of the seminal moments of his childhood. ‘Throughout my life I’ve always gone back to that film. There was something in it that really touched me and taught me a lot about cinema. There’s a level of craftsmanship and beauty that’s unparalleled.’

This Sunday marks the 35th anniversary of Blade Runner, the iconic sci-fi noir from director Ridley Scott. What better way to celebrate — and help ramp up our anticipation for the upcoming sequel — than an exclusive look at Blade Runner 2049? “We are running towards the finishing line right now,” director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) told EW recently. “We are elated. It feels like Christmas as we look at the completed shots.”

We know what he means. Just take a look at the video above, titled Blade Runner 2049: Time to Live, which boasts nearly four minutes from the film along with behind-the-scenes footage. Beginning with Officer K (Ryan Gosling) walking through what looks like deserted casino while Frank Sinatra’s “One For My Baby (And One More For the Road)” plays on the soundtrack, the completely compelling world of 2049 unfolds — a teeming city with holograms the size of skyscrapers, weather that has gone berserk, Jared Leto playing a mysterious someone named “Wallace,” and, of course, the welcome return of Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard.
“I think it’s kind of fun to play a character 30 years later,” says Ford (who knows of which he speaks, considering he did it fairly recently for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and has another Indiana Jones film on the horizon). “The story, the themes, the stunning visual environments — it was a pleasure to get back in the world of Blade Runner again.” (With his trademarked wry smile he also adds, “I’m used to trying on old clothes. Happily, they fit.”)
Filmed in Hungary last year, Villeneuve — along with production designer Dennis Gassner, art director Paul Ingler, and legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins — was able to create elaborate and true landscapes in which his actors could work. Of the 13-time Oscar nominee Deakins, Gosling adds, “Roger is a master storyteller. You realize once you are in one of his shots, half your work has already been done.”
We still don’t know much in the way of the closely guarded plot beyond the official synopsis: “Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard, a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.” But in addition to Gosling, Ford, and Leto, the cast includes Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, Mackenzie Davis, Sylvia Hoeks, and Barkhad Abdi.
“I’ve never felt so much pressure on my shoulders thinking Ridley Scott will see this movie,” says Villeneuve. As for Scott, who serves as executive producer on Blade Runner 2049, he says simply, “It’s good to be home.”

Collider is happy to exclusively premiere a Blade Runner 2049 prequel short film “in-world” piece that explains what happened in the world of Blade Runner between the first movie, set in 2019, and this sequel, set in 2049. The short film "Nexus: 2036" takes place in the year 2036 and revolves around Jared Leto’s character, Niander Wallace. In this short, directed by Luke Scott (Morgan), Wallace introduces a new line of “perfected” replicants called the Nexus 9, seeking to get the prohibition on replicants repealed. This no doubt has serious ramifications that will be crucial to the plot of Blade Runner 2049.

At Comic-Con this summer, Warner Bros. unveiled a teaser that offered a bullet point rundown of the events that have occurred in the Blade Runner timeline since Ridley Scott’s original movie. This “in-world” piece is one of three short films that will debut ahead of Blade Runner 2049, which will further flesh out the Blade Runner universe with even more information. In 2023, government authorities legislated an indefinite “prohibition” on replicant production, as a year prior a massive EMP detonated on the West Coast and is pinned on Replicants. So in this Wallace piece, we’ll see the beginnings of the new Replicants that are created after the prohibition is lifted.
In Blade Runner 2049, thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
