The 70's

1 // 1973 Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon : 12,700,000

2 // 1978 Soundtrack - Grease : 12,000,000

3 // 1977 Soundtrack/Bee Gees - Saturday Night Fever : 11,200,000

4 // 1979 Pink Floyd - The Wall : 10,500,000

5 // 1975 Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here : 8,800,000

6 // 1970 Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Trouble Water : 7,800,000

9 // 1979 Michael Jackson - Off The Wall : 5,500,000

10 // 1976 Eagles - Hotel California : 4,800,000

10 // 1976 ABBA - Arrival : 4,800,000

After the domination of the Beatles in the 60's, we really can speak about a Pink Floyd domination in the 70's, the band managing 3 albums in the Top 5 of the decade including the #1 - the 2 others being soundtracks, mythics Saturday Night Fever & Grease.

Albums from #6 to #8 benefit strongly from their sales in UK, by their the bigger market of Europe back in the 70's.

The 80's

1 // 1982 Michael Jackson - Thriller : 15,400,000

2 // 1985 Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms : 13,900,000

3 // 1989 Phil Collins - But Seriously : 13,400,000

4 // 1987 Michael Jackson - Bad : 13,100,000

5 // 1988 Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman : 10,300,000

6 // 1987 U2 - The Joshua Tree : 10,100,000

7 // 1988 Soundtrack - Dirty Dancing : 10,000,000

8 // 1986 Madonna - True Blue : 8,800,000

9 // 1984 Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA : 7,400,000

10 // 1985 Phil Collins - No Jacket Required : 6,900,000

When Thriller came out in December 1982, it got very average reviews and modest positions in charts, considered at this time as a "sub-Off the Wall". Less than 18 months later it was the clear best selling album ever - In the US, but also in Europe. It remains the one with sales over 15m. Michael Jackson's second album of the decade, Bad, belongs on the 3 followers of Thriller with Brothers In Arms and But Seriously, all three up to more than 13m copies sold.

After a huge gap from this solid group, a second group of 10m selling albums is composed by Tracy Chapman, U2's Joshua Tree and the soundtrack of the decade, "Dirty Dancing". Madonna and Bruce Springsteen appear both at the bottom of the list. Phil Collins, just like Michael Jackson, manages a second album in the top 10, while Face Value sits at #11!

The 90's

1 // 1991 Michael Jackson - Dangerous : 11,600,000

2 // 1993 Soundtrack/Whitney Houston - Bodyguard : 9,800,000

3 // 1997 Celine Dion - Let's Talk About Love : 9,600,000

4 // 1996 Spice Girls - Spice : 9,400,000

5 // 1991 Simply Red - Stars : 8,800,000

6 // 1995 Michael Jackson - History : 8,600,000

7 // 1997 Shania Twain - Come On Over : 7,800,000

8 // 1995 Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill : 7,800,000

9 // 1993 Mariah Carey - Music Box : 7,700,000

10 // 1998 Madonna - Ray Of Light : 7,500,000

10 // 1996 Celine Dion - Falling Into You : 7,500,000

10 // 1991 Genesis - We Can't Dance : 7,500,000

While will he changes a such fact - again, Michael Jackson has got by far the best selling studio album of the decade, "Dangerous" remains up to now the best selling studio album since 1990.

The soundtrack of the decade is now "Bodyguard", which is up to #2 in the list. Wordlwide blockbusters from Celine Dion & Spice Girls came out of #3 and #4, while the gigantic UK seller "Stars" fills the top 5. Just being it, the second Michael Jackson album of the decade shows his lights, just like in the 80's the American entertainer has put his 2 albums of the decade among the very top sellers. They are also only 2 male albums in the list - his 2 albums.

Five huge north american females, Shania Twain, Alanis Morissette, Mariah Carey, Madonna and Celine Dion, have the albums charted from #6 to #10. Celine Dion is the Phil Collins of the decade with 2 albums in the Top 10, one at #3, an other at #10, just like the singer of Genesis during the 80's - Genesis who finaly manage their strongest seller closing the list after 2 decades and a half with We Can't Dance which sold over 2,5m copies in Germany alone.

Top 10 Best Selling Hits Albums

1 // 1992 ABBA - Gold : 13,800,000

2 // 1991 Queen - Greatest Hits II : 13,100,000

3 // 1981 Queen - Greatest Hits I : 11,900,000

4 // 2000 Beatles - One: 9,800,000

5 // 1973 Beatles - 1962-1966 : 9,300,000

6 // 1984 Bob Marley - Legend : 9,200,000

7 // 1990 Elton John - The Very Best of : 9,000,000

8 // 1973 Beatles - 1967-1970 : 8,800,000

9 // 1990 Madonna - The Immaculate Collection : 8,400,000

10 // 1998 U2 - Best Of 1980-1990 : 7,500,000

Being disbanded for 37 years, The Beatles appear 3 times in this list, #4, #5 and #8, which add an amazing amount of sales to their already amazing studio album sales. ABBA lead the group thanks to their alltime blockbuster "Gold" which still selling pretty well despite new hits package from ABBA being released almost every 2 years. Queen have never achieve really massive sales from a single studio album until the death of Freddy Mercury, but at least their incalculable worldwide hits have got a strong recognition from their compilations, I and II sitting at #2 and #3 in the list.

Top 5 Best Selling Live Albums

1 // 1990 Phil Collins - Serious Hits Live : 6,500,000

2 // 1992 Eric Clapton - Unplugged : 6,100,000

3 // 1982 Simon & Garfunkel - The Concert In Central Park : 4,000,000

4 // 1994 Nirvana - MTV Unplugged In New York : 3,700,000

5 // 1983 U2 - Under A Blood Red Sky : 3,400,000

It is really hard to achieve strong sales from a live album. But, when the album is similar to an early hits package, or when it sounds really well, some of them can fly over charts to result in significant sales. This is how the top 2 break the 6m mark with a live album - a real achievment. U2 close this list just like the previous, selling consistently on all kind of stuff - Albums, compilations, Live.

(hors best of bien sur)

All + Fr + It + Esp + PB + Suè + Sui + Fi + Autr) * 1.2 = Europe.
